Apple M3 Max 30-Core GPU Review

The Apple M3 Max 30-core GPU is the binned graphics configuration of the M3 Max chip, offering 30 GPU cores, a 14-core CPU, up to 96GB of unified memory, and 300GB/s of memory bandwidth, found in mid-spec 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models from late 2023.

Apple sells two different M3 Max chips under one name, and this is the smaller of the two: 30 GPU cores instead of 40, a 14-core CPU instead of 16, a 96GB memory ceiling instead of 128GB, and 300GB/s of bandwidth instead of 400GB/s. It's a real reduction, not a marketing distinction, and buyers comparing this listing against the full 40-core M3 Max should treat them as genuinely different chips rather than the same part at a lower price.

The Binned M3 Max, Not a Software-Limited Chip

Apple's mid-spec 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations from late 2023 shipped a physically different silicon bin, fewer GPU cores, fewer CPU cores, and a narrower memory bus, rather than the same die with features disabled in software.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against its own full-fat sibling, the Apple M3 Max 40-Core GPU, this chip gives up 25% of the GPU cores and 100GB/s of bandwidth, a difference that shows up clearly in GPU-bound 3D rendering and multi-stream video work, less so in everyday editing. Against the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, a roughly comparable price-tier part, this Apple chip wins on efficiency and thermals in Metal-native software but concedes ground in games and CUDA-based tools that the RTX 4070 Laptop was built for.

Our verdict

Expert rating7.6 / 10

A strong mid-tier professional GPU that trades real specs for a lower price versus the full 40-core M3 Max, worth it only if the workload doesn't push against the reduced memory bandwidth.

Best for

  • Video editors handling single-stream 4K/6K footage in Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro.
  • Photographers and designers running Metal-accelerated Lightroom, Photoshop, or Affinity workflows.
  • Developers and ML users running moderate-sized local models that fit comfortably under the 96GB memory ceiling.

Not for

  • Heavy multi-stream 8K color grading or dense 3D scenes that benefit from the full 40-core chip's extra bandwidth.
  • Native Windows gaming, where discrete laptop GPUs remain the stronger choice.
  • CUDA-dependent rendering or AI pipelines that require NVIDIA-specific software support.
