Networking enthusiasts specifically wanting official OpenWrt support, and anyone wanting a reliable base for custom firmware experimentation that ultimately needs VLAN control the stock firmware doesn't offer.

On stock Belkin firmware, the RT3200 has no VLAN configuration option at all — it behaves like an ordinary flat-network consumer router. The entire home-lab value proposition depends on flashing OpenWrt, at which point the MediaTek Filogic MT7622's DSA-based switch driver exposes full 802.1Q VLAN tagging, per-port VLAN assignment, and multiple SSIDs mapped to separate VLANs. With 512MB of RAM and a quad-core 1.35GHz CPU, it has enough headroom to run OpenWrt plus a handful of VLANs, firewall zones, and a WireGuard tunnel without the CPU becoming the bottleneck for typical home broadband speeds.

Against the GL.iNet GL-MT3000 Beryl AX ($100), which ships running an OpenWrt-based firmware out of the box with a VLAN toggle already in its GUI, the RT3200 requires manually flashing full upstream OpenWrt to unlock 802.1Q VLAN tagging — appealing more to purists who want the unmodified upstream project rather than a vendor-customized OpenWrt fork. Against the GL.iNet GL-MT6000 Flint 2, RT3200 similarly requires manual flashing rather than GL.iNet's built-in friendlier interface. Compared to the MikroTik hAP ax3 ($130, RouterOS-based), Belkin's OpenWrt path suits Linux-style network tinkering with broad community package support, where RouterOS suits a different, MikroTik-specific configuration philosophy with a steeper but more consistent CLI. Against the TP-Link Archer AX55, which stays locked to stock firmware, the RT3200's real advantage for a home lab is entirely in what it becomes once flashed — VLAN trunking, multiple SSIDs mapped to VLANs, and full firewall control that neither the Archer AX55 nor Belkin's own stock firmware expose.
