The GL.iNet Flint 2 is a dual-band WiFi 6 router built around a completely different audience than everything else in our router lineup, it ships with OpenWrt-based firmware pre-installed, built-in WireGuard and OpenVPN client/server support, and a MediaTek MT7986AV chipset, aimed squarely at enthusiasts who want real configurability and VPN routing without flashing custom firmware themselves. At $139 it's also priced well below every WiFi 7 router we carry.
It's the pick for buyers who specifically want an open, VPN-first router. It is not the right choice for buyers who want a polished consumer app experience and zero technical setup.
Wireless Performance
Rated for roughly 6Gbps combined WiFi 6 throughput (up to 1148Mbps on 2.4GHz, up to 4804Mbps on 5GHz, 8-stream configuration), solid dual-band speeds for the price, though it doesn't support 6GHz or WiFi 7, a deliberate trade-off for the OpenWrt/VPN feature set at this price point.
Build and Design
Two 2.5GbE ports (one WAN, one configurable LAN) plus four Gigabit LAN ports and a USB 3.0 port give it a genuinely capable wired layout for the price. GL.iNet ships its own GL.iNet-branded firmware layered over OpenWrt 21.02, with the full LuCI interface accessible for advanced users who want to go deeper than the simplified app.
Security and Subscriptions
No subscription of any kind, built-in WireGuard and OpenVPN client and server support come included at no extra cost, a fundamentally different security/privacy model than every subscription-gated router in our lineup. The trade-off is that the underlying OpenWrt base version is dated and depends on GL.iNet's own patching cadence rather than mainstream OpenWrt's more frequent security updates.
