NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q Review

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q brought the desktop RTX 2070 Super's TU104 die into thin gaming laptops at an 80-90W power limit, sitting one notch below the RTX 2080 Super Max-Q in NVIDIA's 2020 mobile Turing lineup.

It's the more attainable half of NVIDIA's last-generation Max-Q Turing pairing, giving up some CUDA cores compared to the 2080 Super Max-Q but still delivering solid 1440p performance with first-generation ray tracing in a thin chassis. If you found one of these in a 2020-era ultraportable gaming laptop, it aged reasonably well for esports and older AAA titles.

One Step Below the Flagship Max-Q

NVIDIA positioned this as the value option in its Max-Q Turing lineup, trimming CUDA core count from 3072 down to 2560 relative to the 2080 Super Max-Q while keeping the same GDDR6 memory type and Max-Q power target, which made thin gaming laptops carrying it noticeably cheaper.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q also in this catalog, the 2070 Super Max-Q gives up roughly 15% of the CUDA core count for a lower price point, a fair trade for buyers who don't need the absolute top mobile Turing configuration. Compared with the AMD Radeon RX 6700M in this catalog, a newer RDNA 2 mobile chip, the RX 6700M generally wins in rasterized performance, but the RTX 2070 Super Max-Q counters with a full generation of DLSS support that AMD's FSR was still catching up to at the time.
