NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q Review

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q is a power-optimized version of the desktop RTX 2080 Super's TU104 die, built into thin-and-light gaming laptops from 2020 with clocks and voltage trimmed to fit an 80-90W envelope.

Max-Q trades peak clock speed for a much quieter, cooler, and thinner laptop, so this chip runs the same 3072 CUDA cores as its full-power sibling but at meaningfully lower clocks. It was the top mobile option in thin gaming laptops right before Ampere mobile GPUs took over, and it still handles 1440p gaming with ray tracing enabled at reduced settings.

The Max-Q Tradeoff

Max-Q laptops built around this chip typically ran under 20mm thick with meaningfully quieter fan curves than their full-power counterparts, at the cost of roughly 15-20% lower clocks than a non-Max-Q RTX 2080 Super laptop GPU. For buyers prioritizing portability over absolute peak framerates, that was a fair trade.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q also in this catalog, the 2080 Super variant carries the same 3072 CUDA core count but ships with a higher power ceiling and typically better cooling in the laptops that used it, giving it a modest but real performance edge. Compared with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Max-Q in this catalog, the newer Ampere-based 3070 Max-Q pulls ahead thanks to 2nd-gen RT cores and DLSS 2, which was a meaningful upgrade over the 2080 Super Max-Q's first-generation ray tracing implementation.
