Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K vs Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 2: Comparison

Who each one is for

The Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Recorder is the one to take for edit bays with small-form-factor chassis needing a low-profile card and professionals capturing from SDI camera or switcher outputs without adapters. It is equally the pick for video editors working natively in DaVinci Resolve who need SDI and HDMI capture. It is the wrong buy for console or PC gaming capture, no gaming-oriented software is included at all. Buy the Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 2 for multi-camera event, church, and corporate production setups. The same goes for anyone who needs a capture device that works identically across many different software platforms without driver installs. It is not the one for solo streamers who want a companion app with overlays and scene switching built in. Our rating of the Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Recorder (8/10): an excellent low-profile SDI/HDMI capture card for DaVinci Resolve editors, entirely wrong for gaming capture. Our rating of the Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 2 (8/10): A production-grade capture box that works identically in every piece of software, with no drivers to chase.
