ASUS ROG XG Mobile vs Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650: Comparison
ASUS ROG XG Mobile vs Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650: the connection standard difference
The first real difference is connection standard: ASUS ROG XG Mobile Proprietary against Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650 Thunderbolt 3.
Who each one is for
Take the ASUS ROG XG Mobile for existing ROG Flow X13/X16/Z13 owners wanting the single fastest available eGPU performance with zero setup complexity. It is the wrong buy for buyers with any other laptop brand, genuinely zero compatibility outside the ROG Flow lineup. The Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650 suits RTX 3060/3070-class double-wide card builds on Thunderbolt 3. It is equally the pick for Mac users wanting official Apple eGPU certification on a mid-tier budget. It is not the one for RTX 3080 Ti/3090 or RTX 40-series cards that want more PSU headroom. Our rating of the ASUS ROG XG Mobile (9/10): the fastest ultra-compact eGPU available, an integrated RTX 5070 Ti with proprietary low-latency connectivity, limited exclusively to ROG Flow devices. Our rating of the Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650 (7/10): the right-sized Sonnet box for mid-range Thunderbolt 3 cards, officially Mac-certified.
