AMD Ryzen 7 2700X vs Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K total cores compared
These two are close on paper, and total cores is the only measure that separates them at all: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 8 against Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K 6. Measured rather than claimed: in Blender Cycles (CPU) the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X returns 144 against 122 over 38 runs, a 15% lead. AMD Ryzen 7 2700X also leads on l3 cache, 16 MB on the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X versus 12 MB on the Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K. AMD Ryzen 7 2700X also leads on l2 cache, 4 MB on the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X versus 1.5 MB on the Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K.
Which should you buy, AMD Ryzen 7 2700X or Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K?
Take the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X for content creation and productivity desktop builds wanting genuine 8-core, 16-thread throughput with a bundled cooler. It is not the one for buyers with access to Zen 2 or newer chips, those generations offer meaningfully better per-core performance. Take the Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K for enthusiast desktop builders wanting an unlocked, overclockable 6-core chip with genuinely strong per-core performance. It is the wrong buy for buyers wanting the latest architecture, considerably newer chips offer meaningful IPC and efficiency improvements.
Which is cheaper, AMD Ryzen 7 2700X or Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K?
The Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700K asks 9% more, $359 against $329 for the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X.
