Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H vs Intel 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H: Comparison
What is the difference between 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H and 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H?
Start with l3 cache, because it is the widest measured gap between them: 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H 8 MB against 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H 12 MB, 33% in favour of 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H. Add l2 cache to that, 1 MB on the 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H versus 1.5 MB on the 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H, and the pattern holds. Product line is not the same on both, Core i5 on the 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H versus Core i7 on the 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H. There is a split on release year as well, 2018 on the 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H versus 2020 on the 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H.
Which should you buy, 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H or 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H?
Take the 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H for mid-range gaming laptops wanting solid 4-core performance at a lower price than 6-core i7 options. Avoid it for buyers needing strong multi-threaded performance, the 6-core i7 8750H offers meaningfully more within the same generation. Take the 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H for gaming laptops wanting genuinely high single-core boost clocks within a mainstream 6-core mobile chip. It is the wrong buy for buyers needing 8-core multi-threaded capability, the i7-10870H and higher-tier chips offer more cores.
What 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8300H and 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10850H have in common
Where they agree, they agree completely, efficiency cores, tdp, integrated graphics, socket and form factor included, so the decision does not turn on any of those. They match on 3 further specifications as well.
