AMD Ryzen 5 7520U Review

AMD Ryzen 5 7520U laptop processor: 4 cores, 8 threads, 2.8 GHz base, up to 4.3 GHz boost, 4 MB L3 cache, Radeon 610M graphics (2 cores, up to 1900 MHz), 15 W, Zen 2 Mendocino, 6 nm, LPDDR5-5500 only, up to 16 GB.

The AMD Ryzen 5 7520U is a budget 4-core, 8-thread laptop processor launched in 2022 under the Mendocino codename. Despite the Ryzen 7000 Series name it uses the older Zen 2 core design, boosts up to 4.3 GHz, and pairs 4 MB of L3 cache with AMD Radeon 610M graphics in a 15 W power envelope. It is built for low-cost laptops and everyday basics.

What the Ryzen 5 7520U is

The Ryzen 5 7520U is a laptop chip soldered to the motherboard, aimed at entry-level laptops. It carries a Ryzen 5 badge and a 7000 Series number, but AMD lists it as a Zen 2 design (codename Mendocino) with 4 cores and 8 threads, a 2.8 GHz base clock and up to 4.3 GHz boost. It has 2 MB of L2 and 4 MB of L3 cache, is made on a 6 nm process and runs at a 15 W default power level. It supports only LPDDR5 memory, up to LPDDR5-5500 and a maximum of 16 GB, and uses PCIe 3.0.

Performance in everyday use

Four Zen 2 cores are enough for web browsing, documents, email, video calls and streaming. Multitasking with many browser tabs or heavier apps slows it down sooner than a 6-core chip, and longer jobs such as video exports take noticeably longer. Because the memory is soldered LPDDR5 and capped at 16 GB, the RAM a laptop ships with is the RAM it keeps, so avoid 8 GB models if you can.

Graphics

The Radeon 610M is a small integrated GPU with 2 graphics cores at up to 1900 MHz. It is fine for video playback, video calls and an external display, but it is a basic GPU: expect only very light or older games at low settings. The Radeon Graphics in the Ryzen 5 7530U and the Radeon 760M in Zen 4 chips are far stronger.

Comparison to Alternatives

The Ryzen 5 7520U competes with entry-level Intel chips such as the Core i3-1215U, Core i3-1315U and Core 3 100U in budget laptops. Its sibling, the Ryzen 3 7320U, is the same Mendocino design with lower clocks. The Ryzen 5 7530U sits one step up with 6 Zen 3 cores, a much larger 16 MB L3 cache and stronger graphics, so it is worth checking when the price gap is small. Use the comparison pages below to check each spec side by side.

Should you buy a laptop with it?

Only if the price is low and your needs are simple: browsing, schoolwork, email and streaming. Pick a model with 16 GB of LPDDR5, since the memory cannot be upgraded later. If you can stretch your budget, a laptop with a Ryzen 5 7530U, Ryzen 5 230 or another 6-core chip will stay usable for longer. It has no NPU, so it does not support Copilot+ AI features.

Best for

  • Low-cost laptops for browsing, email and schoolwork
  • Streaming video and video calls
  • Light office work on a tight budget

Not for

  • Heavy multitasking, video editing or 3D work
  • Gaming beyond very light or older titles

FAQs

Is the AMD Ryzen 5 7520U good for a laptop?

For basic use, yes. Its 4 Zen 2 cores handle browsing, documents, streaming and video calls. It is an entry-level chip, so heavier work and games are better on a laptop with a 6-core Zen 3 or Zen 4 processor.

Is the Ryzen 5 7520U Zen 4?

No. AMD lists the Ryzen 5 7520U as a Zen 2 chip under the Mendocino codename, built on a 6 nm process. The Ryzen 7000 Series name does not mean Zen 4 here. For Zen 4 in the same naming family, look at the Ryzen 5 7640U or Ryzen 5 7540U.

How many cores does the Ryzen 5 7520U have?

4 cores and 8 threads, with a 2.8 GHz base clock, up to 4.3 GHz boost, 2 MB of L2 cache and 4 MB of L3 cache.

Can you upgrade the RAM in a Ryzen 5 7520U laptop?

No. The Ryzen 5 7520U supports LPDDR5 only, up to LPDDR5-5500 and a maximum of 16 GB in dual channel. LPDDR5 is soldered to the motherboard, so buy the memory size you need from the start.

Can the Ryzen 5 7520U play games?

Only very light or older games at low settings. The Radeon 610M has just 2 graphics cores. For gaming, a laptop with Radeon 760M graphics or a dedicated GPU is a much better choice.
