Apple M2 Ultra Review
Launched in mid-2023, the Apple M2 Ultra is a 24-core System-on-Chip (16 performance cores plus 8 efficiency cores) built on an enhanced 5nm process within a 60 Watt TDP, found in the Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
Like the M1 Ultra before it, the M2 Ultra fuses two M2 Max dies together via Apple's UltraFusion interposer, doubling CPU cores, GPU cores, and memory bandwidth over the M2 Max. It was also the first Ultra-tier chip to reach the Mac Pro, which had previously shipped with an Intel Xeon and PCIe expansion as its main selling point.
UltraFusion, Second Generation
The same die-fusion approach used for the M1 Ultra scales up for the M2 generation, joining two M2 Max dies into a single 24-core CPU with unified access to a much larger memory pool.
Bringing Apple Silicon to the Mac Pro
The M2 Ultra's arrival in the Mac Pro completed Apple's transition of its entire Mac lineup away from Intel, though the Mac Pro's PCIe expansion slots became largely vestigial without a discrete GPU option.
Benchmarks
Geekbench 5 multi-core scores around 21,500 reflect the doubled core count over the M2 Max, keeping the M2 Ultra competitive with high-end desktop workstation CPUs on multi-threaded work.
