Apple M4 Max GPU Review

The M4 Max is Apple's highest-tier GPU configuration for the current MacBook Pro generation, aimed at professional video, 3D, and machine learning workloads that need the largest unified-memory pool Apple offers outside the Mac Studio's Ultra tier.

Not a PC-installable part: included for the same cross-shopping reason as the other Apple Silicon GPUs in this batch, since this chip regularly appears in "M4 Max vs. RTX 4090" style comparison searches.

Apple's Largest Laptop GPU

Configurable up to a 40-core GPU, the M4 Max offers roughly double the graphics core count of the M4 Pro, aimed squarely at professional creative and technical workloads running natively on macOS.

A Genuine RTX-Class Comparison Point

Apple's own launch marketing directly compared the M4 Max against high-end discrete laptop GPUs, and independent testing in Metal-optimized workloads has generally supported competitive, if not always superior, positioning against similarly-priced Windows laptop GPU configurations.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against the RTX 4090 already on this site, the M4 Max is not gaming-focused and trails significantly in native Windows game frame rates, but is genuinely competitive in Metal-optimized professional creative applications at a fraction of the power draw. Against the M4 Pro covered in this batch, the Max roughly doubles GPU core count and memory bandwidth for workloads that can use it.
