Avocent SV Universal DP/H Review

The Avocent SV240DPH is a 4-port DisplayPort/HDMI desktop KVM switch with 4K@30Hz support, the non-secure Avocent-branded counterpart to Vertiv's isolated SwitchView line.

Avocent and Vertiv SwitchView share the same hardware lineage, but the SV240DPH skips the isolated-channel security engineering, so it's aimed at everyday multi-computer desks rather than mixed-security-domain use - which makes its price tag look steep against pure consumer switches with no security story at all.

Same Family, No Isolation Premium Removed

Despite dropping the isolated-switching hardware that justifies the SwitchView 300's price, the SV240DPH is priced identically to it - buyers mainly pay for the Avocent enterprise support and build quality rather than any added feature.

Everyday Four-Machine Switching

Best suited to network operators or IT staff who legitimately need to flip between four non-sensitive machines on one console and want enterprise-grade reliability rather than a consumer-grade switch.

Comparison to Alternatives

Versus the Vertiv SwitchView 300 Series (SV340DPH-400) - same port count and video standard, but adds isolated switching for the same price, making the SwitchView the better buy unless brand/support contract matters. Versus the Avocent SV240 - the older non-DP/H SV240 model at a lower price for buyers who don't need DisplayPort. Versus the ATEN CS1922 - a much cheaper 2-port consumer switch for those who don't need enterprise support or 4 ports.

Expert rating6 / 10

Solid but overpriced next to its own isolated sibling at the same cost - worth it mainly for existing Avocent support contracts.

Best for

  • IT teams standardizing on Avocent hardware and support contracts
  • Four-machine desks not requiring security isolation
  • Network operators needing reliable enterprise-grade DP/HDMI switching

Not for

  • Security-conscious desks (the SwitchView 300 offers isolation for the same price)
  • Budget buyers who don't need enterprise support
  • Two-machine setups (oversized for the need)
