Intel Core i5-13400 Review
Intel Core i5-13400 desktop processor: 10 cores (6P + 4E), 16 threads, up to 4.6 GHz, 20 MB L3 and 9.5 MB L2 cache, 65 W base and 148 W max turbo power, Intel UHD Graphics 730, LGA1700, DDR5-4800 and DDR4-3200, PCIe 5.0, Intel 7, Raptor Lake.
The Intel Core i5-13400 is a 10-core, 16-thread desktop processor from Intel's 13th Gen Core family, launched in early 2023 for the LGA1700 socket. It pairs 6 performance cores with 4 efficient cores, boosts up to 4.6 GHz, has a 65 W base power and includes Intel UHD Graphics 730. It suits mainstream home and office PCs as well as budget gaming builds with a graphics card.
What the Core i5-13400 is
The Core i5-13400 is a socketed LGA1700 desktop chip from the 13th Gen Raptor Lake family, built on the Intel 7 process. It has 6 performance cores with Hyper-Threading and 4 efficient cores, 16 threads in total. The performance cores run from 2.5 GHz up to 4.6 GHz and the efficient cores from 1.8 GHz up to 3.3 GHz, with 20 MB of L3 cache and 9.5 MB of L2 cache. Intel rates it at 65 W base power with up to 148 W of turbo power. It supports DDR5-4800 or DDR4-3200 memory in two channels, up to 192 GB, and 20 PCIe lanes with PCIe 5.0 support. The multiplier is locked, so there is no CPU overclocking. Intel sold it both boxed and as a tray part, and its ordering data lists two steppings, B0 and C0.
Performance in everyday use
Everyday work feels quick: browsing, office apps, video calls and photo editing all run smoothly, and the 4 efficient cores keep background tasks away from the fast cores. With a mid-range graphics card it handles modern games well, and at 1440p the graphics card usually sets the frame rate. Long renders, large code compiles and heavy video exports finish sooner on the 14-core Core i5-13500. Motherboards can let it draw up to 148 W under load, so a decent cooler helps it hold its boost during long tasks.
Graphics
The built-in Intel UHD Graphics 730 has 24 execution units running at up to 1.55 GHz and can drive up to 4 displays over HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a. It handles 4K video playback, office work and multiple monitors with ease, and Intel Quick Sync Video speeds up video encoding in editing apps. It is not meant for modern gaming, so plan on a graphics card for that. The integrated GPU also means you can run the PC without a graphics card, which is handy for troubleshooting.
Comparison to Alternatives
The Core i5-13400F is the same chip without integrated graphics and costs a little less. The Core i5-13500 adds 4 more efficient cores, more cache and the stronger UHD Graphics 770. Against AMD, the Ryzen 5 8500G is the closest match with integrated graphics on AM5, while the Ryzen 5 7600 and Ryzen 5 5600 are 6-core, 12-thread options on AM5 and AM4. LGA1700 ended with Intel's 14th Gen, while AMD keeps adding chips for AM5. The comparison pages below show each spec side by side.
Should you buy it?
Yes, if you want a capable all-round desktop chip that works without a graphics card, for home, office or small-business PCs, with room to add a graphics card for gaming later. It pairs well with DDR4 on a low-cost B660 or B760 board. If you will always use a graphics card, the Core i5-13400F does the same job for less. If you want a longer CPU upgrade path, an AM5 build is the better bet.
Our verdict
Reviewed by Burooj Alam. Rated by us, not by users.
Best for
- Home and office desktops that run on integrated graphics
- Budget gaming builds that add a graphics card
- Video editing that benefits from Intel Quick Sync
Not for
- Modern gaming without a graphics card
- Overclocking, since the multiplier is locked
- Heavy rendering or long compiles, where 14-core chips finish sooner

FAQs
Is the Intel Core i5-13400 good for gaming?
Yes, with a graphics card. Its 6 performance cores run modern games well alongside a mid-range graphics card. The built-in UHD Graphics 730 is only meant for light or older games.
What is the difference between the Core i5-13400 and i5-13400F?
They share the same 10 cores, 16 threads, clocks and cache. The 13400 adds Intel UHD Graphics 730 and Quick Sync Video, while the cheaper 13400F has no integrated graphics and needs a graphics card.
Does the i5-13400 support DDR4 and DDR5?
Yes. It supports DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s and DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s in two channels, up to 192 GB. The motherboard decides which type you use.
Can you overclock the Core i5-13400?
No. The multiplier is locked, so the cores cannot be overclocked. Faster XMP memory still works on boards that support memory overclocking.
How many monitors can the Core i5-13400 run without a graphics card?
Intel UHD Graphics 730 supports up to 4 displays, with HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a outputs depending on the motherboard.
