Intel Core i5-13400F Review

Intel Core i5-13400F desktop processor: 10 cores (6P + 4E), 16 threads, up to 4.6 GHz, 20 MB L3 and 9.5 MB L2 cache, 65 W base and 148 W max turbo power, LGA1700, DDR5-4800 and DDR4-3200, PCIe 5.0, no integrated graphics, Intel 7, Raptor Lake.

The Intel Core i5-13400F is a 10-core, 16-thread desktop processor from Intel's 13th Gen Core family, launched in early 2023 for the LGA1700 socket. It pairs 6 performance cores with 4 efficient cores, boosts up to 4.6 GHz and has a 65 W base power. It has no integrated graphics, so it is built for budget and mid-range gaming PCs that use a graphics card.

What the Core i5-13400F is

The Core i5-13400F is a socketed LGA1700 desktop chip from the 13th Gen Raptor Lake family, built on the Intel 7 process. It has 6 performance cores with Hyper-Threading and 4 efficient cores, 16 threads in total. The performance cores run from 2.5 GHz up to 4.6 GHz and the efficient cores from 1.8 GHz up to 3.3 GHz, backed by 20 MB of L3 cache and 9.5 MB of L2 cache. Intel rates it at 65 W base power with up to 148 W of turbo power. It works with either DDR5-4800 or DDR4-3200 memory in two channels, up to 192 GB, and offers 20 PCIe lanes with PCIe 5.0 support. The multiplier is locked, so the cores cannot be overclocked. Intel sold it both boxed and as a tray part, and its ordering data lists two steppings, B0 and C0.

Performance in everyday use

For gaming, the 6 performance cores are the part that matters most, and they keep modern games running smoothly when paired with a mid-range graphics card. At 1440p and above, the graphics card usually sets the frame rate rather than this CPU. The 4 efficient cores take background work such as downloads, chat apps and browser tabs, which helps when you game and stream or multitask. Office work, photo editing and light video editing all run well. Long renders, big code compiles and heavy video exports finish sooner on the 14-core Core i5-13500 or Core i5-13600K. Motherboards can let it draw up to 148 W under load, so a decent tower cooler keeps it at full speed during long tasks.

Graphics

The F in the name means there is no integrated GPU. You need a graphics card to get any display output at all, even to install Windows. It also means no Intel Quick Sync Video, the hardware video engine that lives in Intel's integrated graphics, so video encoding runs on your graphics card or the CPU cores. If you want a backup display output or Quick Sync for editing, the Core i5-13400 is the same chip with Intel UHD Graphics 730.

Comparison to Alternatives

The Core i5-13400 is identical apart from its UHD Graphics 730 and a slightly higher price. The Core i5-13490F keeps the same 10 cores but adds more cache and a higher boost clock. Against AMD, the Ryzen 5 5600 has 6 cores and 12 threads on the older AM4 platform with DDR4 only, while the Ryzen 5 7500F and Ryzen 5 8400F use the AM5 socket with DDR5 only. AM5 keeps getting new AMD chips, while LGA1700 ended with Intel's 14th Gen. The comparison pages below show each spec side by side.

Should you buy it?

Yes, if you are building a budget or mid-range gaming PC with a graphics card, especially if you want to reuse DDR4 memory or pick a low-cost B660 or B760 board. It is a strong fit for 1080p and 1440p gaming. Choose the Core i5-13400 instead if you want a display output without a graphics card or Quick Sync for video work. If you care about upgrading the CPU later, keep in mind that LGA1700 has no newer Intel generations coming, while AMD's AM5 does.

Our verdict

Reviewed by Burooj Alam. Rated by us, not by users.

Best for

  • Budget and mid-range gaming PCs with a dedicated graphics card
  • Builders reusing DDR4 memory on an LGA1700 motherboard
  • Gaming while streaming or multitasking, with 16 threads

Not for

  • PCs without a graphics card, since it has no integrated GPU
  • Overclocking, since the multiplier is locked
  • Heavy rendering or long compiles, where 14-core chips finish sooner

FAQs

Is the Intel Core i5-13400F good for gaming?

Yes. Its 6 performance cores handle modern games well when paired with a mid-range graphics card, and at 1440p the graphics card usually sets the frame rate. It is a popular choice for budget and mid-range gaming PCs.

Does the Core i5-13400F have integrated graphics?

No. The F means it has no integrated GPU, so you need a graphics card for any display output. It also lacks Intel Quick Sync Video. The Core i5-13400 is the same chip with Intel UHD Graphics 730.

Does the i5-13400F support DDR4 and DDR5?

Yes. It supports DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s and DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s in two channels, up to 192 GB. Your motherboard decides which type you use, since a board takes either DDR4 or DDR5, not both.

Can you overclock the Core i5-13400F?

No. Its multiplier is locked, so the cores cannot be overclocked. You can still run faster XMP memory on motherboards that support memory overclocking.

What socket and motherboards does the i5-13400F use?

It uses the LGA1700 socket, so it works with Intel 600 and 700 series motherboards such as B660, B760, Z690 and Z790. Older 600 series boards may need a BIOS update before they recognize a 13th Gen chip.
