Intel Core i5-14500 Review
Intel Core i5-14500 desktop processor: 14 cores (6P + 8E), 20 threads, up to 5.0 GHz, 24 MB L3 cache, 11.5 MB L2 cache, 65 W base power, 154 W max turbo power, LGA1700, DDR5-4800 and DDR4-3200, ECC support, PCIe 5.0, Intel UHD Graphics 770, Intel 7.
The Intel Core i5-14500 is a 14-core, 20-thread desktop processor from Intel's 14th Gen Core lineup, launched in early 2024 for the LGA1700 socket. It boosts up to 5.0 GHz, has 24 MB of L3 cache, a 65 W base power and Intel UHD Graphics 770. It is aimed at buyers who want more multi-core power than the Core i5-14400 without paying for an unlocked K chip.
What the Core i5-14500 is
The Core i5-14500 is a locked 14th Gen Intel Core desktop chip for the LGA1700 socket. It pairs 6 performance cores with Hyper-Threading with 8 efficient cores, 20 threads in total. Performance cores boost to 5.0 GHz and efficient cores to 3.7 GHz, and it has 24 MB of L3 cache and 11.5 MB of L2 cache. Base power is 65 W with a 154 W maximum turbo power. It supports DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s or DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s, up to 192 GB, and ECC memory on a board that supports it. The multiplier is locked, so it cannot be overclocked.
Performance in everyday use
Everyday tasks, office work and multitasking are no challenge, and the extra efficient cores over the Core i5-14400 help in work that spreads across many threads, such as video exports, 3D rendering, code compiles and running several apps at once. In games, the six performance cores and higher boost clock matter most, so it plays at a similar level to other current six performance core Intel chips when paired with a good graphics card. To get its full multi-core speed you need a motherboard that allows its full turbo power and a cooler that can handle it.

Graphics
Intel UHD Graphics 770 with 32 execution units at up to 1.55 GHz is built in and can run up to four displays. It handles office work, 4K video and Intel Quick Sync hardware encoding and decoding for video editing and streaming. It is not built for modern games, so a graphics card is still the way to go for gaming. Having it means the PC works without a graphics card, which suits office and workstation builds.
Comparison to Alternatives
Compared with the Core i5-14400, the 14500 adds four efficient cores, more cache, higher clocks and UHD Graphics 770. The Core i5-14600 is a small step up again in clocks and DDR5 speed. AMD's Ryzen 5 7600 and Ryzen 5 9600 have 6 cores and 12 threads on AM5, with a longer upgrade path, but they need DDR5. Intel's Core Ultra 5 245 is the successor on the new LGA1851 socket and adds an NPU. The comparison pages below show each spec side by side.
Should you buy it?
Yes, if you want a locked Core i5 with extra multi-core muscle for editing, rendering or heavy multitasking on an LGA1700 board, and you want integrated graphics as a fallback. For a pure gaming build with a graphics card, the Core i5-14400F usually gives better value. LGA1700 has no newer CPUs coming, so if a future drop-in upgrade matters, look at AM5 instead.
Our verdict
Reviewed by Burooj Alam. Rated by us, not by users.
Best for
- Mixed work and gaming desktops that need more multi-core power than a Core i5-14400
- Video editing and streaming that use Intel Quick Sync
- Office and small workstation builds that can run without a graphics card
Not for
- Overclocking, because the multiplier is locked
- Budget pure gaming builds, where the Core i5-14400F costs less
- Buyers who want a socket with future CPU upgrades

FAQs
What is the difference between the Core i5-14500 and the 14400?
The 14500 has 14 cores and 20 threads versus 10 cores and 16 threads, because it adds four efficient cores. It also boosts higher, up to 5.0 GHz, has more cache, a 154 W turbo power limit and the stronger UHD Graphics 770. In games the gap is small, while multi-threaded work benefits more.
Is the Core i5-14500 good for gaming?
Yes, with a graphics card. Its 6 performance cores boost up to 5.0 GHz and handle modern games well at 1080p and 1440p. If you only game, the cheaper Core i5-14400F is usually the better value.
Does the Core i5-14500 support DDR4 and ECC memory?
It supports DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s and DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s, up to 192 GB in two channels. Intel lists ECC memory support, but you need a motherboard with a chipset that enables ECC, such as a W680 board.
Can you overclock the Core i5-14500?
No. The multiplier is locked. For overclocking on the same platform, look at the Core i5-14600K or 14600KF.
Does the Core i5-14500 need a graphics card?
No. It has Intel UHD Graphics 770 built in, which can run up to four displays and handles office work, video playback and Quick Sync video encoding. Add a graphics card for gaming.
