8th Gen Intel Core i5 8265U Review
The 8th Gen Intel Core i5 8265U is a 4-core, 8-thread laptop processor on Whiskey Lake with a 1.6 GHz base clock, 3.9 GHz boost, 6 MB L3 cache and a 15 W TDP.
A low-power laptop chip from 2018, built on a 14 nm process with Intel UHD Graphics 620. Four cores and eight threads suit everyday browsing, office apps and light multitasking. The 15 W TDP targets thin-and-light laptops, and the BGA package (FCBGA1528) means the chip is soldered to the board and cannot be swapped. Memory support is DDR4 or LPDDR3.
Intel UHD Graphics 620
A basic integrated GPU intended for display output and light everyday use, adequate for productivity and media consumption but not gaming.
How Is the Core i5 8265U in Terms of Performance
The 4-core, 8-thread layout gives this chip solid everyday ultraportable performance, with Whiskey Lake's refined process bringing modest efficiency gains over earlier Kaby Lake Refresh chips.
Benchmarks
Cinebench R20 multi-core scores of 1,235 and single-core scores of 398 reflect solid mainstream ultraportable performance for a 15W 4-core chip. Geekbench 5 multi-core scores of 3,309 confirm competent everyday multi-threaded capability.
