Intel Core Ultra 5 235U Review
Intel Core Ultra 5 235U laptop processor: 12 cores (2P + 8E + 2 LP-E), 14 threads, up to 4.9 GHz, 12 MB cache, Intel Graphics with 4 Xe-cores, 12 TOPS NPU, 15 W base power, Intel 3, Core Ultra 200U series.
The Intel Core Ultra 5 235U is a 12-core, 14-thread laptop processor from Intel's Core Ultra 200U series, launched in early 2025. It sits just above the Core Ultra 5 225U with higher base and boost clocks, up to 4.9 GHz, and keeps the 12 MB cache, 4 Xe-core Intel Graphics and 12 TOPS NPU in a 15 W base power envelope. It is mostly found in business and everyday thin-and-light laptops.
What the Core Ultra 5 235U is
The Core Ultra 5 235U is a low-power laptop chip, soldered to the motherboard, so you choose it by choosing the laptop. It uses the same 12-core layout as the Core Ultra 5 135U it replaces: 2 performance cores, 8 efficient cores and 2 low-power efficient cores, 14 threads in total. Intel builds it on the Intel 3 process, with a 2.0 GHz performance-core base clock and up to 4.9 GHz boost. It supports DDR5-6400 or LPDDR5X-8400 memory in two channels, up to 128 GB, plus Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe 4.0.
Performance in everyday use
With 2 performance cores, the 235U is built for quick response and long battery life rather than heavy multi-core work. Browsing, office apps, video calls and streaming run smoothly, and the efficient cores take background tasks off the fast cores. Compared with the Core Ultra 5 225U, its higher base and boost clocks give a small lift in both light and sustained loads. Long exports, large code builds and heavy spreadsheet recalculation still take longer than on H-series chips with more performance cores. Laptop makers can run it from about 12 W up to a 57 W burst, so cooling and power settings matter.
Graphics and AI
The integrated Intel Graphics has 4 Xe-cores running at up to 2.05 GHz. It handles 4K video, several external displays and light photo editing, and can run older or lighter games at low settings. It is not the Arc graphics found in the H-series or the Core Ultra 200V chips. The built-in NPU is rated at 12 TOPS, which is enough for Windows Studio Effects such as background blur, but short of the 40 TOPS needed for Copilot+ PC features.
Comparison to Alternatives
Against the Core Ultra 5 135U it replaces, the 235U keeps the same core count and moves to the newer Intel 3 process with higher clocks. The Core Ultra 5 225U is the same design at lower clocks, so it is the budget pick when the price gap is large. AMD's Ryzen 5 230 offers 6 full-size cores and 12 threads, while the Ryzen AI 5 340 adds a Copilot+ class NPU. The Core Ultra 5 226V costs more but brings Arc graphics, on-package memory and Copilot+ support. The comparison pages below show each spec side by side.
Should you buy a laptop with it?
Yes, if you want a light, quiet business or everyday laptop for office work, school or travel, and battery life matters more than heavy multi-core speed. If a similar laptop with the 225U is much cheaper, that is a sensible saving, since the two chips are closely related. Aim for at least 16 GB of dual-channel memory and a good screen. If you want Copilot+ features or better graphics for casual gaming, look at a Core Ultra 200V or Ryzen AI 300 laptop instead.
Our verdict
Reviewed by Burooj Alam. Rated by us, not by users.
Best for
- Business and student thin-and-light laptops
- Office work, browsing, video calls and streaming
- Long battery life in a 15 W class laptop
Not for
- Heavy video rendering or code compiling, where H-series chips finish sooner
- Gaming beyond older or light titles at low settings
- Copilot+ PC AI features, which need a 40+ TOPS NPU

FAQs
Is the Intel Core Ultra 5 235U good for a laptop?
Yes, for everyday use. Its 12 cores handle browsing, office apps, video calls and light editing well while keeping power use low. It is not meant for heavy rendering or modern games.
Is the Core Ultra 5 235U a desktop or laptop processor?
It is a laptop processor. It is soldered to the laptop motherboard and is not sold as a boxed CPU, so you cannot buy it on its own or upgrade it later.
What is the difference between the Core Ultra 5 235U and the 225U?
They share the same 12-core, 14-thread design, 12 MB cache, 4 Xe-core graphics and 12 TOPS NPU. The 235U runs higher clocks, with a 2.0 GHz performance-core base and up to 4.9 GHz boost, versus 1.5 GHz and 4.8 GHz on the 225U.
Does the Core Ultra 5 235U support Copilot+ PC features?
No. Its NPU is rated at 12 TOPS, and Copilot+ features need 40 TOPS or more. For those, look at Intel Core Ultra 200V or AMD Ryzen AI 300 laptops.
Can the Core Ultra 5 235U play games?
Only light and older games. Its Intel Graphics with 4 Xe-cores runs esports and older titles at low settings, especially with dual-channel memory. For modern games, choose a laptop with a dedicated GPU.
