Intel Laminar RM1 Review

The Intel Laminar RM1 is the stock cooler Intel bundles with select boxed Core-series CPUs, a simple aluminum heatsink with no heatpipes and a small fan rated for roughly 65W of TDP. It exists purely to let a low-power CPU run out of the box, not to compete with any aftermarket cooler on this list.

Thermal Performance

With no heatpipes and a solid aluminum base, the Laminar RM1 handles only roughly 65W of TDP, adequate purely for the specific low-power, non-K-series boxed CPUs Intel bundles it with, and it runs noticeably hotter and louder than any aftermarket cooler under sustained load.

Fan Design and Noise

The small 82mm fan tends to run at higher, more audible RPM than aftermarket coolers even at modest loads, since there's little thermal mass or heatpipe capacity to absorb heat before the fan has to spin up.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against the ARCTIC Freezer 36, covered elsewhere on this site, even ARCTIC's budget aftermarket cooler runs meaningfully cooler and quieter than the Laminar RM1 for a modest cost, since it adds real heatpipes the stock cooler lacks entirely.
