Plugable Thunderbolt 5 AI eGPU Enclosure & Dock (TBT5-AI) (850W Built-In PSU / 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5 / 96W Host Charging / Prosumer Local-AI GPU Housing) Review
The Plugable Thunderbolt 5 AI eGPU Enclosure (TBT5-AI) is an 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5 external GPU dock with an 850W built-in ATX power supply, 96W host charging, and room for full-size 3.5-slot GPUs up to 346mm, built for prosumers running large graphics cards for local AI/LLM inference outside a desktop chassis.
Plugable's newest eGPU box is explicitly aimed past gaming and at the local-AI crowd — people who want to bolt a big, power-hungry consumer GPU (think a 4090-, 5090-, or workstation-class card) onto a laptop or small-form-factor PC to run LLM inference locally. The 850W built-in PSU and support for GPUs up to 346mm/~600W is generous headroom most eGPU boxes don't offer, and Thunderbolt 5's 80Gbps ceiling roughly doubles the bandwidth of the Thunderbolt 3/4 boxes that have dominated this category for years, which matters more for model-loading and PCIe-bound workloads than it does for gaming frame rates. The tradeoffs are real: it's Windows 11 only at launch (no macOS/Linux support), it needs a fairly recent host (11th-gen+ Intel or Zen 4+ AMD) with a Thunderbolt 5 port to actually hit that bandwidth, and cooling is left mostly to the GPU itself since the enclosure only adds one internal fan. As a brand-new SKU there isn't independent third-party benchmark coverage yet, so real-world thermals and sustained-load stability under actual local-AI inference are still largely unverified outside the manufacturer's own claims.
Built for Local AI, Not Just Gaming
Most eGPU enclosures are marketed at gaming laptops that want more GPU horsepower on the road. The TBT5-AI is pitched differently: Plugable specifically frames it around running large consumer/workstation GPUs for local LLM inference and other AI workloads on a machine that otherwise couldn't house one. The 850W PSU and support for up to ~600W, 346mm-long cards means it can house genuinely high-end GPUs rather than just mid-range mobile-replacement cards.
Thunderbolt 5's Bandwidth Jump
At 80Gbps, Thunderbolt 5 nominally doubles the 40Gbps ceiling of Thunderbolt 3/4, which has been the bottleneck in nearly every eGPU review for the last several years. That extra bandwidth is most useful for tasks that move large amounts of data across the link — like loading multi-gigabyte model weights — rather than for gaming, where the earlier TB3/TB4 bottleneck was already a smaller factor. It does require a genuine Thunderbolt 5 host port to realize; plugged into a TB3/TB4/USB4 host it will negotiate down and lose the bandwidth advantage.
Early Days: Windows-Only, No Independent Reviews Yet
This is a newly launched product with essentially no independent review coverage as of this writing — evaluate the specs here as manufacturer-stated until third-party thermal and performance testing exists. It currently only supports Windows 11; macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS are explicitly unsupported, which rules it out for a meaningful slice of the local-AI/ML tinkerer audience that runs Linux.
Comparison to Alternatives
Against older Thunderbolt 3 boxes like the GIGABYTE AORUS Gaming Box series in this catalog, the TBT5-AI trades a pre-installed, fixed GPU for a user-supplied full-size card, roughly double the interconnect bandwidth, and a much larger 850W PSU built for high-wattage AI/workstation cards rather than a single pre-selected gaming GPU. Against the PELADN Link S-3 below, the TBT5-AI's built-in 850W PSU is the key differentiator — the Link S-3 requires you to supply and connect your own ATX/SFX power supply externally, which is cheaper and more flexible but a meaningfully more involved build.

Expert rating7 / 10
A genuinely differentiated, well-specced Thunderbolt 5 eGPU box for local-AI GPU hosting, but it's brand new, Windows-only, and still awaiting independent benchmarking — treat the manufacturer's numbers as a starting point, not a verified ceiling.
Best for
- Prosumers running local LLM inference or other AI workloads on a full-size consumer/workstation GPU outside a desktop tower.
- Windows 11 users with a genuine Thunderbolt 5 host port who want to avoid supplying a separate PSU.
- Buyers who want enclosure headroom for large, high-wattage GPUs (up to ~600W, 346mm) rather than a compact mobile-class card.
Not for
- macOS or Linux users — the enclosure is Windows 11 only at launch.
- Gamers chasing frame rates on a laptop — the value proposition here is AI/compute workloads, not gaming latency.
- Buyers who want independently verified thermal and performance data — this is a new SKU with no third-party reviews yet.
