Plugable UD-6950Z Review

The Plugable UD-6950Z is a DisplayLink-based triple 4K docking station that connects via either USB-C or USB-A, working on both Mac and Windows systems regardless of which port type the host laptop offers.

Plugable built its whole business around DisplayLink hubs, and the UD-6950Z is its most display-heavy model: three separate monitor outputs driven entirely through software rather than the laptop's native video pipeline. The upstream connection works over USB-C or older USB-A ports alike, which makes it one of the few docks in this catalog that doesn't care what generation of laptop you own, as long as a DisplayLink driver is installed.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against the Anker 575 USB-C Hub, both use DisplayLink, but the UD-6950Z pushes a third external display where the Anker 575 stops at two, at the cost of a higher price and 30Hz refresh across all three panels. Against the Wavlink Universal Docking Station, both support USB-A upstream connections, but the Plugable adds a third display output and a full-size GbE port the Wavlink's simpler 2-display design doesn't include.
