AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS vs AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX: Comparison
What is the difference between Ryzen 9 5900HS and Ryzen 9 5980HX?
The first real difference is p-core boost clock: Ryzen 9 5900HS 4.6 GHz against Ryzen 9 5980HX 4.8 GHz. There is a split on p-core base clock as well, 3 GHz on the Ryzen 9 5900HS versus 3.3 GHz on the Ryzen 9 5980HX. There is a split on tdp as well, 35 W on the Ryzen 9 5900HS versus 45 W on the Ryzen 9 5980HX. Igpu is not the same on both, AMD Radeon Graphics on the Ryzen 9 5900HS versus AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics on the Ryzen 9 5980HX. There is a split on microarchitecture as well, Zen 3 "Cezanne", Ryzen 5000 Series on the Ryzen 9 5900HS versus Zen 3, Ryzen 5000 Series "Cezanne" on the Ryzen 9 5980HX.
Which should you buy, Ryzen 9 5900HS or Ryzen 9 5980HX?
Take the Ryzen 9 5900HS for thin-and-light gaming laptops wanting near-flagship AMD performance at a typically more accessible price than the 5980HS. It is not the one for buyers specifically chasing the absolute highest available clock speed, the flagship Ryzen 9 5980HS, covered elsewhere on this site, edges ahead there. Take the Ryzen 9 5980HX for desktop-replacement gaming laptops wanting AMD's absolute strongest mobile Zen 3 performance without HS-tier power constraints. It is the wrong buy for buyers wanting a thin, portable gaming laptop, the HS-tier chips are specifically built for thinner chassis designs.
Where the two are identical
Everything else lines up. Total cores, performance cores, efficiency cores, total threads and l3 cache read the same on both, so those are not worth weighing. They match on 9 further specifications as well.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Integrated Graphics the same on the Ryzen 9 5900HS and Ryzen 9 5980HX?
It is. Both are listed at Yes, so it is not a reason to pick one over the other.
