8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y vs 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H l3 cache compared
On l3 cache the spread is 75%, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y 4 MB against 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H 16 MB, so 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H takes it. 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H also leads on l2 cache, 0.5 MB on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y versus 2 MB on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H. There is a split on p-core base clock as well, 1.5 GHz on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y versus 2.4 GHz on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H. Tdp is not the same on both, 5 W on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y versus 45 W on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H. They differ on socket too, FCBGA1515 on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y versus FCBGA1440 on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H.
Which should you buy, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y or 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H?
Take the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8500Y for premium fanless 2-in-1 and ultraportable designs wanting the strongest available chip in Intel's ultra-low-power tier. It is the wrong buy for any performance-focused computing, the 5W power budget is a genuine ceiling on sustained throughput. Take the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H for premium workstation-class laptops from major OEMs wanting genuine 8-core Comet Lake mobile performance. Avoid it for budget-conscious buyers, the more widely-available i7-10750H or i7-10870H deliver similar practical performance in more accessible laptops.
Where the two are identical
Everything else lines up. Efficiency cores, integrated graphics, form factor, market segment and smt enabled read the same on both, so those are not worth weighing.
