Intel 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H vs Intel 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H: Comparison
What is the difference between 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H and 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H?
These two are close on paper, and total cores is the only measure that separates them at all: 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H 6 against 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H 8. Add l3 cache to that, 12 MB on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H versus 16 MB on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H, and the pattern holds. 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H also leads on l2 cache, 1.5 MB on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H versus 2 MB on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H. They differ on release year too, 2019 on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H versus 2020 on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H.
Which should you buy, 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H or 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H?
Take the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H for gaming and creator laptops of its generation wanting solid 6-core Coffee Lake Refresh performance. Avoid it for buyers with access to the later 10th Gen i7-10750H, that chip offers a modest generational improvement on a similar core configuration. Take the 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H for premium workstation-class laptops from major OEMs wanting genuine 8-core Comet Lake mobile performance. It is the wrong buy for budget-conscious buyers, the more widely-available i7-10750H or i7-10870H deliver similar practical performance in more accessible laptops.
What 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H and 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10885H have in common
Everything else lines up. Efficiency cores, tdp, integrated graphics, socket and form factor read the same on both, so those are not worth weighing. They match on 3 further specifications as well.
