8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 vs 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H: the p-core boost clock difference
P-core boost clock is the dividing line, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 4.6 GHz against 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H 4.5 GHz. There is a split on market segment as well, Desktop on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 versus Laptop on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H. Microarchitecture is not the same on both, Coffee Lake, 8th Gen Intel Core on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 versus Coffee Lake, 9th Gen Intel Core on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H. They differ on base power too, 65 W on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 versus 45 W on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H.
8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 vs 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H: which one fits your build
Take the 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 for mainstream desktop builders wanting genuine 6-core Coffee Lake performance without paying for overclocking headroom. Avoid it for enthusiasts wanting to overclock, the unlocked i7-8700K offers that flexibility at a similar price. Take the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H for mainstream gaming laptops of the Coffee Lake generation wanting dependable, well-understood 6-core performance. It is not the one for buyers wanting the newer Tiger Lake or Comet Lake architecture, later generations offer meaningful IPC and efficiency gains over Coffee Lake.
Where the two are identical
The common ground is wider than the gap: total cores, performance cores, efficiency cores, total threads and l3 cache are identical here. They match on 4 further specifications as well.
