Intel 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H vs Intel 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H: Comparison
What is the difference between 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H and 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H?
Start with l3 cache, because it is the widest measured gap between them: 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H 9 MB against 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H 12 MB, 25% in favour of 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H. There is a split on p-core boost clock as well, 4.3 GHz on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H versus 4.6 GHz on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H. They differ on release year too, 2018 on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H versus 2019 on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H. Microarchitecture is not the same on both, Coffee Lake, 8th Gen Intel Core on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H versus Coffee Lake Refresh, 9th Gen Intel Core on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H. The memory type figures are near enough to ignore, DDR3-2133, DDR4-2666 on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H versus DDR4-2666, LPDDR3-2133 on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H.
Which should you buy, 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H or 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H?
Take the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H for premium mobile workstations from major OEMs wanting a modest step up over the mainstream i7-8750H. It is not the one for budget-conscious buyers, the mainstream i7-8750H delivers very close performance for typically less. Take the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H for gaming and creator laptops of its generation wanting solid 6-core Coffee Lake Refresh performance. Avoid it for buyers with access to the later 10th Gen i7-10750H, that chip offers a modest generational improvement on a similar core configuration.
What 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H and 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H have in common
Where they agree, they agree completely, total cores, performance cores, efficiency cores, total threads and p-core base clock included, so the decision does not turn on any of those. They match on 10 further specifications as well.
Frequently asked questions
Is the TDP the same on the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8850H and 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9850H?
It is. Both are listed at 45 W, so it is not a reason to pick one over the other.
