What is the difference between 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H and 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK?
These two are close on paper, and total cores is the only measure that separates them at all: 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H 6 against 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK 8. Add l3 cache to that, 12 MB on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H versus 16 MB on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK, and the pattern holds. 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK also leads on l2 cache, 1.5 MB on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H versus 2 MB on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK. They differ on release year too, 2019 on the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H versus 2020 on the 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK.
Which should you buy, 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H or 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK?
Take the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H for mainstream gaming laptops of the Coffee Lake generation wanting dependable, well-understood 6-core performance. It is the wrong buy for buyers wanting the newer Tiger Lake or Comet Lake architecture, later generations offer meaningful IPC and efficiency gains over Coffee Lake. Buy the 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK for enthusiast gaming laptops wanting an unlocked, overclockable mobile flagship chip. It is not the one for buyers not planning to overclock, the standard i7-10870H delivers similar stock performance for less.
What 9th Gen Intel Core i7 9750H and 10th Gen Intel Core i9 10980HK have in common
Everything else lines up. Efficiency cores, tdp, integrated graphics, socket and form factor read the same on both, so those are not worth weighing. They match on 2 further specifications as well.
