AMD EPYC 9654P Review

AMD EPYC 9654P 96-core 192-thread SP5 server processor, 2.4GHz base / 3.7GHz boost, 360W TDP, 384MB L3 cache, Zen 4 "Genoa"

The EPYC 9654P is a single-socket-optimized EPYC processor priced for servers that will never need a second CPU socket. Built on Zen 4 "Genoa" and rated for 360W, it pairs 96 cores and 192 threads with a 2.4GHz base clock that boosts up to 3.7GHz, backed by 384MB of L3 cache on AMD's SP5 server platform.

Core Count and Workload Fit

With 96 cores and 192 threads, the EPYC 9654P is built for data center workloads that scale across many cores: virtualization hosts, container orchestration, databases, and web-tier fleets. Base clock of 2.4GHz with boost to 3.7GHz means per-thread performance trails the higher-clocked EPYC SKUs somewhat, trading it for core density. The 384MB L3 cache keeps per-core cache allocation reasonable for the socket.

Platform, Memory, and Cooling

The EPYC 9654P runs on AMD's SP5 platform with 12-channel DDR5 memory support and up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes per socket, giving it enormous memory bandwidth and I/O headroom for NVMe storage arrays and high-speed networking. As a single-socket-optimized SKU, it is priced and validated specifically for 1P servers rather than 2P deployments. At 360W, it requires server-grade cooling: high-static-pressure fans and a chassis designed for sustained data-center airflow, not a repurposed desktop tower.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against AMD's own dual-socket-capable EPYC 9654 in this catalog, the EPYC 9654P offers the same 96-core density at a lower cost for deployments that only ever needed one socket. Against a Threadripper PRO workstation chip in this catalog, it adds far more memory channels and true server validation, at the cost of workstation single-socket simplicity being the point rather than a limitation. It undercuts an equivalent-core-count 2P Xeon Scalable deployment on total platform cost.
