AMD Radeon Pro W5700X Review
The AMD Radeon Pro W5700X gets searched almost exclusively by Mac Pro 2019 owners trying to work out which configure-to-order GPU option they have and whether it's worth upgrading.
It's a Mac-exclusive MPX-module version of AMD's RDNA1 workstation card, packing the same Navi 10 die as the consumer RX 5700 XT but with 16GB of GDDR6 (double the consumer card's VRAM) and Apple-specific power delivery through the MPX bay.
Mac Pro Context
AMD built the W5700X as the mid-tier GPU option for the 2019 Mac Pro, sitting below the HBM2-equipped Vega II cards but well above integrated graphics for editors and 3D artists working in Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Cinema 4D. Its 16GB of GDDR6 and lack of ray tracing hardware reflect its 2019 RDNA1 origins - fine for the video-centric workloads Apple targeted, less useful for anything demanding modern real-time ray tracing.
Comparison to Alternatives
The standard PCIe AMD Radeon Pro W5700, sold for Windows/Linux workstations, uses the identical Navi 10 die and VRAM configuration but in a conventional slot-card form factor rather than Apple's proprietary MPX module - functionally the same GPU, different chassis. Stepping up within the Mac Pro lineup to the AMD Radeon Pro VII trades this card's GDDR6 for HBM2 and roughly doubles compute throughput for heavier GPU-compute workloads, at a real cost premium.

Plays back and exports 4K and 8K timelines across several camera codecs, with effects and multi-stream sequences, in Adobe Premiere Pro.
Export time rewards more cores, but much of the timeline work runs on the hardware decoder and the graphics card instead of the processor. A small gap here rarely changes how the edit feels.
