Apple M1 Max 24-Core GPU Review

The Apple M1 Max 24-core GPU is the binned graphics configuration of the original M1 Max chip, with 24 GPU cores, up to 64GB of unified memory, and the full 400GB/s memory bandwidth, found in mid-spec 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models from late 2021.

Apple cut a quarter of the GPU cores from the full M1 Max to create this mid-spec option, but left the memory subsystem untouched: same 400GB/s bandwidth, same 64GB ceiling as the 32-core version. It was, and remains, the more budget-conscious way into the M1 Max's professional memory architecture, at the cost of real shader throughput for anyone doing dense 3D or heavy color work.

The Entry Point Into M1 Max's Memory Architecture

This chip let 2021 MacBook Pro buyers access the M1 Max's 400GB/s memory bandwidth and 64GB ceiling at a lower price than the full 32-core part, a meaningful option for buyers who valued memory capacity over peak GPU throughput.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against the full Apple M1 Max 32-Core GPU, this chip loses a third of GPU cores while keeping identical bandwidth, a real difference in GPU-bound tasks like 3D rendering but a smaller one in memory-bound editing work. Against the Apple M1 Pro 16-Core GPU covered elsewhere in this catalog, this binned Max chip still delivers roughly 50% more bandwidth and additional GPU cores, the clearer step up for anyone whose budget allows either.

Expert rating6.7 / 10

A budget-minded entry into M1 Max's memory architecture that trades real GPU core count for a lower price, still a meaningful step above M1 Pro for memory-bound creative work.

Best for

  • Video editors on a 2021-era MacBook Pro handling ProRes or RAW footage that benefits from 400GB/s bandwidth.
  • Photographers and designers running Metal-accelerated creative apps within a 64GB memory ceiling.
  • Buyers who wanted M1 Max's memory architecture without paying for the full 32-core GPU.

Not for

  • Dense 3D rendering or multi-layer VFX work, where the full 32-core M1 Max delivers meaningfully more throughput.
  • Hardware ray tracing workloads, which Apple didn't introduce until the M3 generation.
  • Native Windows gaming or CUDA-based software.
