Safety and handling

A swollen pack means stop using the device now. Do not charge it, press on it, puncture it or pry at it with metal tools, and keep it out of water and household waste.

New packs ship at partial charge, around 30 percent, because air transport rules for lithium ion batteries require it. A pack that arrives low is correct, not faulty. Charge it fully before you judge it.

Recycle the old pack at an electronics or battery drop-off point. Never mail it back.

Age and condition

Lithium ion loses capacity on the shelf. Battery University's storage figures show roughly 96 percent retained after a year at 25C and 40 percent charge, against about 80 percent for a pack stored full. A pack that sat in a warehouse for years can arrive tired.

None of the listings we checked for this pack state a manufacture date code, so check the date printed on the label when it arrives. On HP machines a tired old stock pack can trigger the Primary (internal) Battery (601) alert on first boot, so a 601 on day one is a reason to return it.

Can I fit a higher capacity pack in my Pavilion 15?

We have no HP listing for a larger pack in the HT03XL machines. Some 15 series models shipped with a different pack, so match your old code rather than shopping for more capacity.

Why does my laptop say the battery is not genuine?

HP firmware measures rather than authenticates. The Primary (internal) Battery (601) alert fires when measured capacity or the self test falls below HP's threshold, which an aged new old stock pack can do on first boot. So a 601 on a fresh HT03XL usually points to a tired pack, not a fake one. Ask the seller for a replacement with a recent date code.

Why did my new HT03XL arrive at 30 percent?

Because it has to. IATA rules in force since 1 January 2026 require lithium ion batteries like this 41.9Wh pack to travel by air at no more than 30 percent of rated capacity. A low pack on arrival is correct. Charge it to full in the laptop and run it through a normal cycle before deciding anything about its health.
