Intel Core i5-1235U Review

Intel Core i5-1235U laptop processor: 10 cores (2P + 8E), 12 threads, up to 4.4 GHz, 12 MB cache, Intel Iris Xe Graphics (80 EU, up to 1.2 GHz), 15 W base power, 55 W max turbo, Intel 7, 12th Gen Alder Lake.

The Intel Core i5-1235U is a 10-core, 12-thread laptop processor from Intel's 12th Gen Alder Lake-U family, launched in early 2022. It boosts up to 4.4 GHz, has 12 MB of cache and Iris Xe graphics with 80 execution units, all in a 15 W base power envelope. It powered a huge number of mainstream thin-and-light and business laptops, and it still shows up in budget and refurbished models today.

What the Core i5-1235U is

The Core i5-1235U is a low-power 12th Gen laptop chip, soldered to the motherboard, so you pick it by picking the laptop. It mixes two core types: 2 performance cores and 8 efficient cores, 12 threads in total. The performance cores boost to 4.4 GHz and the efficient cores to 3.3 GHz, with 12 MB of shared cache. It runs at a 15 W base power with up to 55 W in short bursts, is built on Intel 7, and supports up to 64 GB of DDR5-4800, DDR4-3200, LPDDR5-5200 or LPDDR4x-4267 memory in two channels, plus Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe Gen 4.

Performance in everyday use

For browsing, office apps, video calls and streaming, the i5-1235U still feels responsive, and the efficient cores keep background tasks off the performance cores. With only 2 performance cores, long exports, big spreadsheets and code compiles take noticeably longer than on H-series or P-series chips. Laptop makers set their own power limits and cooling, so thin models often run it slower under long loads than thicker ones.

Graphics

The integrated graphics have 80 execution units running at up to 1.2 GHz. Intel only allows the Iris Xe name when the laptop has dual-channel memory; with a single memory stick the same graphics are labeled Intel UHD and run noticeably slower. The graphics handle 4K video, up to four displays and light photo editing, and older or lighter games run at low settings. There is no NPU for AI features.

Comparison to Alternatives

The 13th Gen Core i5-1334U and i5-1335U that replaced it keep the same 2P + 8E layout with a slightly higher 4.6 GHz boost and support for faster memory, so the gap is small. The 2024 Core 5 120U pushes the same design to a 5.0 GHz boost. AMD's Ryzen 5 5625U and Ryzen 5 7530U, its direct rivals in the same price range, offer 6 full Zen 3 cores and 12 threads. The comparison pages below show each spec side by side.

Should you buy a laptop with it?

Yes, if the laptop is cheap, has 16 GB of dual-channel memory and a good screen, since it still handles everyday work well. At a similar price, a laptop with a 13th Gen chip or a Core 5 120U gives you slightly newer silicon and faster memory support. If you want AI features or better integrated graphics, look at newer Core Ultra or Ryzen laptops instead.

FAQs

Is the Intel Core i5-1235U still good in 2026?

For everyday use, yes. Its 10 cores still handle browsing, office apps, video calls and streaming well. It makes most sense in a discounted or refurbished laptop, since newer chips cost little more and add features.

Is the Core i5-1235U a desktop or laptop processor?

It is a laptop processor. It is soldered to the laptop motherboard and is not sold as a boxed CPU, so you cannot buy it on its own or swap it later.

What is the difference between the Core i5-1235U and the i5-1335U?

Both have 2 performance and 8 efficient cores, 12 threads and 12 MB of cache. The 13th Gen i5-1335U boosts a little higher, up to 4.6 GHz versus 4.4 GHz, and supports faster DDR5 memory. In daily use the difference is small.

Does the Core i5-1235U have Iris Xe graphics?

Only when the laptop has dual-channel memory. With a single memory stick, Intel labels the same graphics as Intel UHD and they run noticeably slower. Check the memory setup before you buy.

Can the Core i5-1235U play games?

Only older and lighter games at low settings. Its integrated graphics are fine for esports and casual titles, especially with dual-channel memory. For modern games, pick a laptop with a dedicated GPU.
