Pine64 PineTab is an open-source-friendly 10.1-inch Linux tablet built on the Allwinner A64 SoC, aimed at developers who want a genuinely open, community-hackable tablet rather than a locked-down Android or iPad device.

The PineTab treats a tablet the way most SBCs treat a bare board: fully open schematics, mainline Linux kernel support efforts, and a community actively porting mobile Linux distros like postmarketOS and Ubuntu Touch onto it. It's slow and rough compared to a modern tablet, but it's one of the only tablets you can genuinely modify and self-repair like a Pi project.

Open Hardware Tablet Philosophy

Where mainstream tablets are sealed and locked to their OEM's OS, the PineTab publishes schematics and works with the mobile Linux community to support mainline kernels, making it a testbed for postmarketOS, Manjaro ARM, and other alternative mobile Linux projects.

Modest but Usable Hardware

The Allwinner A64's quad Cortex-A53 cores and 2GB of RAM were entry-level even at launch, so day-to-day use means lightweight window managers and web browsing rather than heavy multitasking, but that's an acceptable tradeoff for its target audience of Linux tinkerers.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against the ClockworkPi uConsole, another portable Linux device, the PineTab offers a larger touchscreen and true tablet form factor while the uConsole focuses on a physical keyboard clamshell. Compared to buying a Raspberry Pi 5 plus a separate touchscreen, the PineTab is a more integrated, if less powerful, portable package.
