About Laptop Batteries

Replacement laptop batteries grouped by interchangeable part number, cell count and connector.

Replacement batteries listed by capacity in watt-hours, cell count, nominal voltage, connector type and the OEM spare part numbers each one replaces.

Manufacturers revise batteries mid-cycle, so the same laptop can take two different connectors depending on when it was built. Enter your battery part number and we list the alternatives that fit, with cell count, capacity and connector type stated, because a 3-cell and a 4-cell of the same family are different physical sizes.

All 63 batteries here carry their compatible model list, and 31 also carry the OEM spare part number, which is the field worth matching on. Capacity is stated in watt-hours rather than mAh: mAh without a voltage is not a capacity, and sellers use it to make a smaller battery look bigger.

Start with how to find the right replacement battery. If the machine will not power on and you are not sure the battery is the fault, read battery, charger or board first. For the mAh trick, see mAh vs Wh, and for what a fair price looks like, replacement cost.

How to choose a replacement laptop battery

Match the manufacturer part number, not the laptop model. Most laptops shipped with more than one battery part over their life, differing in capacity, connector and physical depth.

Watt hours is the spec, mAh is the marketing

A seller quoting a large mAh figure at a different cell voltage is quoting a smaller battery. Wh is voltage multiplied by amp hours and is directly comparable. Compare the Wh on the listing against the Wh printed on your existing pack.

Capacity claims above the original are a warning sign

A replacement advertised well above the factory Wh in the same physical shell is almost always overstated. The cells have not changed size.

Voltage must match exactly

Cell count sets the voltage. An 11.4V pack and a 15.2V pack are three cell and four cell designs, and they are not interchangeable even if the connector looks the same.

Check the connector and the ribbon

Connector type, pin count and cable length vary within a model line. Photographs of the actual part beat the compatibility list.

Age and storage matter on arrival

Lithium cells degrade on the shelf. A pack manufactured three years ago and stored charged has already lost capacity. Ask for the manufacture date where you can.

Shipping and disposal

Lithium packs ship under restrictions, which is why delivery can be slower and why some sellers will not ship internationally. Do not put the old pack in household waste, and do not keep a swollen one.

Common mistakes

  • Buying on price and receiving cells with no protection circuit.
  • Reusing an old pack that has started to swell. Replace it immediately, it is a fire risk.
  • Assuming a battery fixes a machine that will not charge. The charger or the board is often the fault.

FAQs

How do I find the right battery for my laptop?

Match the part number on the battery itself or the OEM spare part number, not the laptop model name. One model often shipped with two or three different batteries depending on build date and region.

Why is capacity given in watt-hours and not mAh?

Watt-hours is energy. mAh is charge, and it only means something alongside the voltage. A 4,000 mAh pack at 15.4V holds more than a 5,000 mAh pack at 7.6V, which is why listings quoting only mAh are usually quoting the flattering number.

Can I fit a higher capacity battery than the original?

Only if it is the same physical size and connector. Higher capacity in the same footprint usually means better cells rather than more of them. Anything physically larger will not close the case.

Is an OEM battery worth the extra over a third party one?

Often yes for cell quality and protection circuitry, which is what determines whether the pack ages safely. [Replacement cost](/blog/laptop-battery-replacement-cost) compares the two properly.

How do I know the battery is the problem and not the charger?

Symptoms overlap. A machine that runs on mains but not on battery, or that reports a battery it cannot charge, points at the pack, but a failed charger or board looks similar. [Battery, charger or board](/blog/diagnose-laptop-battery-charger-or-board) walks through the checks.

How long should a laptop battery last?

Most packs hold usable capacity for around 300 to 500 full charge cycles, which is two to four years of normal use. Sudden drops in runtime, swelling or a refusal to charge past a set percentage all mean replacement.
