About Mechanical Keyboards

Compare mechanical keyboards by layout, switch type and connectivity.

Keyboards listed by switch technology, feel, actuation force and travel, layout size, mount type, case and plate material, keycap material and firmware platform.

Magnetic Hall effect and TMR switches are listed separately from mechanical, because adjustable actuation and rapid trigger only exist on those.

Linear vs tactile vs clicky covers the feel side, and what adjustable actuation numbers actually mean covers the Hall effect side, including where rapid trigger helps and where it is marketing. Popular comparisons: Keychron V1 vs Logitech Pro X 60 Lightspeed and Keychron Q1 Max vs Varmilo VA87Me.

How to choose a mechanical keyboard

Switch feel and layout size decide whether you keep the board. Everything else is refinement.

Switch type

Linear switches move smoothly with no feedback and suit gaming and fast typing. Tactile switches have a bump at the actuation point, which most typists prefer. Clicky switches add noise and are unwelcome in shared rooms. Actuation force is a secondary preference: heavier springs reduce accidental presses and tire the hand faster.

Magnetic switches are a different product

Hall effect and TMR switches read position continuously rather than as on or off. That gives adjustable actuation depth and rapid trigger, which matter in a few competitive games and nowhere else. They cost more and the switch choice is usually fixed.

Layout size is a daily decision

Full size keeps the numpad. TKL drops it and returns desk space for the mouse. 75 and 65 percent keep the arrow keys. 60 percent puts arrows and function keys on a layer, which some people never adapt to. Decide by what you press daily, not by the photo.

Mount and sound

Gasket mounted boards flex slightly and sound softer. Tray mount is firmer and usually louder and sharper. Case material, plate material and any internal foam change the sound more than the switch does.

Keycaps

PBT resists shine and holds texture. ABS goes glossy within months of heavy use. Check the legend method too: doubleshot and dye sublimated legends do not wear off, printed ones do.

Firmware

QMK and VIA support means remapping without vendor software and without a cloud account. Proprietary software is fine until it stops being updated.

Common mistakes

  • Buying clicky switches for an office.
  • Choosing a 60 percent board and then needing the function row for work every day.
  • Assuming hot swap sockets survive constant switch changing. They do not.

FAQs

What is the difference between linear, tactile and clicky?

Linear is smooth the whole way down, tactile has a bump at the actuation point, clicky adds an audible click to that bump. It is preference, not performance.

What is rapid trigger and do I need it?

On magnetic switches, it resets the key the moment you begin lifting rather than at a fixed point. It matters for fast directional changes in competitive games and nowhere else.

Is hot-swappable worth having?

Yes if you might change switches, since it means no soldering. Check the socket type, as 3-pin and 5-pin switches are not interchangeable without trimming.

PBT or ABS keycaps?

PBT resists shine and wear better and sounds slightly deeper. ABS is smoother when new and develops a polished surface over time.
