AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT Review
The AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT launched in early 2020 as a 1080p-focused RDNA 1 card, notable for a last-minute BIOS update that bumped clocks and memory speed right before launch to better compete with NVIDIA's GTX 1660 Ti and Super.
It's a genuinely solid 1080p card that came out of a slightly messy launch (early review samples ran an older BIOS than retail cards actually shipped with), but once that settled it delivered strong 1080p performance with 6GB of the newer GDDR6 rather than the GDDR5 still common at that tier.
The Launch-Week BIOS Bump
AMD's last-minute update pushed memory speed from 12 Gbps to 14 Gbps and raised the power limit on most partner cards, a rare case of a GPU getting meaningfully faster in its first week thanks to a firmware change rather than reviewers testing a slower initial spec.
Comparison to Alternatives
Against the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 also in this catalog, the RX 5600 XT trades blows depending on the title: the 1070's extra 2GB of VRAM and CUDA core count help in some newer games, but the 5600 XT's newer RDNA 1 architecture and faster GDDR6 win out in others. Compared with the AMD Radeon RX 6600 (already in this catalog), the RX 6600's newer RDNA 2 architecture delivers a clear generational jump in both performance and efficiency, making the 6600 the better buy today if both are similarly priced.

Plays back and exports 4K and 8K timelines across several camera codecs, with effects and multi-stream sequences, in Adobe Premiere Pro.
Export time rewards more cores, but much of the timeline work runs on the hardware decoder and the graphics card instead of the processor. A small gap here rarely changes how the edit feels.
Our verdict

Expert rating5.5 / 10
A solid 1080p card in its day; the lack of ray tracing and only 6GB VRAM make it a budget-tier pick against newer RDNA 2/3 options today.
Best for
- Budget 1080p gaming builds
- Esports titles at high refresh rates
- Buyers upgrading from GTX 10-series or older
Not for
- Ray tracing or upscaling-dependent titles
- 1440p gaming ambitions
- VRAM-heavy modern AAA titles
