Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 16IRU9 Review

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 16IRU9 is a 16-inch everyday laptop from 2024 built around the Intel Core 7 150U. It uses a 1920x1200 IPS panel at 60Hz. It weighs 1.81 kg.

Where it shines: long battery life (12 hours 42 minutes of Wi-Fi browsing). What holds it back: soldered memory, a 61.2% sRGB screen and no Thunderbolt.

Processor performance

Measurements come from NotebookCheck's review unit with the Core 7 150U, 16GB of RAM, the 57Wh battery and the 1200p IPS touchscreen.

The Intel Core 7 150U has 10 cores (2 performance and 8 efficiency), boosting to 5.4 GHz. Office work, study, browsing and 1080p editing run smoothly; long 4K exports and big builds take a while.

NotebookCheck measured about 22W of sustained CPU power in this chassis. The chassis limit, not the chip rating, is what decides long render times. Across the 2 systems NotebookCheck has tested with the Intel Core 7 150U, it averages 470 points in Cinebench 2024 multi-core (range 432 to 508). Where this laptop lands in that range depends on how much power it lets the chip draw. Under sustained load the processor drops from its short 37 W burst to about 22 W after roughly a minute to keep the core near 70 C. There is no NPU, so Copilot and other AI features run more slowly than on Core Ultra models even though the keyboard has a Copilot key.

Graphics and gaming

Graphics come from the integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 96EUs. It handles video playback, photo edits and lighter or older games at modest settings.

Gaming (average across systems). These are NotebookCheck's average frame rates for the Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 96EUs across every system it has tested with this GPU, not this laptop alone. Power limits differ between laptops, so this one can land above or below the average.

Memory, storage and upgrades

Memory: fixed. 16GB of LPDDR5X-5200 is soldered to the board, so buy the amount you will need for the life of the laptop; configurations go up to 32GB.

Storage: replaceable. One M.2 slot, already in use (M.2 2242 installed), M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4.

The bottom panel comes off with a T5 Torx screwdriver, and the single SSD slot is the only upgrade because the RAM is soldered.

Display

The 16-inch IPS panel runs at 1920x1200 (142 pixels per inch) and 60Hz, with touch. It is rated at 300 nits. NotebookCheck measured 308 nits and 847:1 contrast. It covers 61.2% of sRGB (41.5% P3), so colors look muted and it is not suited to color work. Response time is 15.1 ms. No PWM flicker was detected.

Out of the box the panel is poorly calibrated, and its narrow color range makes saturated colors inaccurate even after calibration. At around 300 nits the screen washes out outdoors, especially in direct sunlight.

Thermals and noise

NotebookCheck measured 43.3 dB(A) under load and 23 dB(A) at idle. You will hear it, but it is not intrusive. The hottest surface reached 35.4 °C.

The fan often stays silent at idle and during light office work, and there is no coil whine.

Battery life

The battery is 57Wh. NotebookCheck got 12 hours 42 minutes of Wi-Fi browsing, but only 1 hour 36 minutes under full load. A full charge takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Design and build

Materials: Aluminum (metal version reviewed). At 1.81 kg it is heavier than 80% of the budget mainstream laptops we list. It measures 356x251x16.9 mm. The hinges open to about 170 degrees but wobble slightly when you adjust the lid.

The smooth matte metal surfaces pick up fingerprints that are hard to wipe off, and the lid and base flex a little more than on higher-end Lenovo models. The chassis carries MIL-STD-810H certification despite its budget positioning.

Keyboard and touchpad

The backlit keyboard with number pad and Copilot key feels shallow and soft, which keeps it quiet but gives weak feedback. Backlight: White.

The 12 x 7.5 cm Mylar clickpad is smaller than on the IdeaPad Pro 5 16 but has a firm, clicky response. Sign-in: Dedicated fingerprint reader.

Ports and connectivity

There is no Thunderbolt, so docks and fast external drives run at USB speeds. It charges over USB-C.

Full list: 2x USB-C with Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, left side, 2x USB-A, right side, 1x HDMI 1.4, 1x microSD card reader, 1x 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack. Wireless: Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

Webcam, speakers and extras

Webcam: 1080p (2MP) with physical privacy shutter; no IR camera on the review unit (IR is optional per Lenovo). Speakers: Up-firing stereo, 2x 2W.

The up-firing speakers get only moderately loud for a 16-inch laptop and have almost no bass.

Which configuration to buy

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 16IRU9 name covers several builds. Processors: Intel Core 5 120U and Intel Core 7 150U. Memory: Up to 32GB LPDDR5x-5200, soldered. Screens: 16-inch 1920x1200 IPS, 300 nits, 60% sRGB, non-touch; 16-inch 1920x1200 IPS, 300 nits, 100% sRGB, non-touch; 16-inch 1920x1200 IPS touch, 300 nits, 60% sRGB; 16-inch 2048x1280 OLED, 400 nits, 100% DCI-P3, 120Hz, glossy. Batteries: 47Wh, 57Wh and 76Wh. Check the exact configuration on the listing before you buy.

Superseded: Lenovo now sells the IdeaPad Slim 5 16 with newer Ryzen AI 300 (16AKP10) and Intel chips, but the 16IRU9 is still listed on Lenovo PSREF.

Our verdict

Expert rating6.9 / 10

This IdeaPad Slim 5 16 has a Core 7 150U, 16GB of LPDDR5X, a 1TB SSD and a 16-inch 1920 x 1200 touchscreen. The 57 Wh battery makes it a fair choice for people who want to get through a full day away from the charger and have a large screen for office work.

Memory is soldered at 16GB and the single SSD slot is filled, so upgrades are limited.

Best for

  • A full day away from the charger

Not for

  • Anyone who wants to upgrade memory later
  • Thunderbolt docks and external GPUs
