Crucial BX500 SATA III SSD, added as a replacement after the originally planned Crucial P310 turned out to already be in the catalog; a rock-bottom budget SATA drive for basic upgrades.

The BX500 exists for one job: get someone off a mechanical hard drive as cheaply as possible. Dropping the DRAM cache keeps costs down, and for a boot drive or light-use secondary storage that's rarely a dealbreaker — you'll notice the difference mainly if you're regularly copying huge files, which isn't what this drive is built for.

Comparison to Alternatives

Against Crucial's own MX500 already in this catalog, the BX500 gives up the DRAM cache and higher endurance rating in exchange for a noticeably lower price, making the MX500 the better choice for anyone doing heavier sustained writes. Compared with the Kingston A400, the two compete directly in the entry-level SATA tier with very similar real-world performance.
