MUX Switch vs Optimus: Which Gaming Laptops Actually Have One

By Burooj Alam · Last checked October 10, 2026

Fewer than a quarter of laptops state how they route the discrete GPU. About one in four gaming and workstation machines with a dedicated GPU still ship plain Optimus, and two Acer Nitro V models with the same RTX 5050 differ on it.

If you are asking whether your laptop has a MUX switch, you are really asking whether its discrete GPU can drive the built-in screen directly. Without one it cannot. The frames go through the integrated graphics first, and you lose performance you already paid for.

Of the 179 laptops we list, 117 have no discrete GPU at all, so the question does not apply to them. 42 state how they route it. The remaining 20 say nothing, which on a gaming machine is not a good sign.

What a MUX switch actually does

Three arrangements exist, and the names are worse than the concept.

Optimus. The discrete GPU renders, then copies the finished frame across to the integrated GPU, which owns the laptop display. That copy costs you frames and adds a little latency. It is good for battery, because the discrete GPU can idle completely when nothing needs it.

MUX switch. A physical multiplexer lets the discrete GPU take the display directly. You get the frames back. You normally reboot to change mode, and the dGPU stays awake, so battery life drops.

Advanced Optimus. A MUX that switches on its own without a reboot, and keeps G-Sync working. It is the version you want, and it is the one that costs the manufacturer most.

How many laptops have a MUX switch?

Counting only the machines that state it:

Narrow it to the machines where it matters, gaming laptops and mobile workstations with a discrete GPU, and 33 state a mode. 25 of those have a MUX or Advanced Optimus. 8 are plain Optimus.

The eight that still ship without one

They are not old stock. Three are 2025 models.

  • Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 15AHP10, RTX 5060, 2025
  • Acer Nitro V 15 ANV15-52, RTX 5050, 2025
  • Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8, RTX 4060 and RTX 4050 versions
  • Dell G15 5530, RTX 4060
  • HP Victus 15-fb, RTX 3050
  • ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA506, RTX 3060
  • ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 G532LWS, RTX 2070 Super

The pattern is the budget line. Victus sits under Omen, LOQ sits under Legion, Nitro V sits under Predator, G15 sits under Alienware. The MUX is one of the things cut to hit the price.

Two Acer Nitro V models, same GPU, different answer

This is the clearest example in our data of why the model number matters more than the spec sheet.

Lenovo does the same thing inside one generation. The Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 with an RTX 5080 has Advanced Optimus. The Legion 5 Gen 10 with an RTX 5060, same year, is Optimus only.

Which brands fit them

Among the gaming and workstation machines we list that state a mode, ASUS has the most MUX implementations at five, all in ROG and TUF. Lenovo has the most Advanced Optimus at five, all Legion. HP's three are all ZBook or Omen, not Victus.

Workstations are better served than you might expect. Four of the MUX machines are mobile workstations, the HP ZBook Fury 16 G11 and ZBook Power 16 G11, the Dell Precision 5690 and the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, where driving an external colour-critical display from the dGPU is the point.

One outlier worth naming: the Framework Laptop 16 has a MUX and a removable graphics module, which is the only machine in our list where the discrete GPU itself is a user-replaceable part.

How to check before you buy

Read the model number, not the GPU. The GPU tells you nothing about routing. Two laptops with the same RTX 5050 differ, as above.

Treat silence as a no. 20 of the laptops we list with a discrete GPU do not state a mode. Manufacturers advertise a MUX when they have one, because it is a selling point against the model below.

Check whether it is Advanced. Plain MUX means rebooting to switch, which in practice means most people pick one mode and leave it. If you want battery life on the move and frames when docked, Advanced Optimus is the one that does both without a restart.

If you already own the laptop, look in the vendor control panel: Armoury Crate on ASUS, Lenovo Vantage, Omen Gaming Hub, NitroSense. A GPU mode or display mode setting that offers "Discrete" or "Ultimate" means a MUX is present. If the only option is automatic, it is Optimus.

You can filter our laptop catalogue by graphics switching along with panel type, memory slots and weight. If you are still choosing a machine, the laptop buying guide covers the rest of the decision, and the laptop GPU tier list ranks the mobile parts themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Does my laptop have a MUX switch?

Check the vendor control panel first: Armoury Crate, Lenovo Vantage, Omen Gaming Hub or NitroSense. A GPU or display mode offering Discrete or Ultimate means a MUX is present. If the only setting is automatic, it is Optimus. Of the 42 laptops we list that state a mode, 29 have a MUX or Advanced Optimus and 13 do not.

What is the difference between a MUX switch and Optimus?

With Optimus the discrete GPU renders a frame and copies it to the integrated GPU, which owns the laptop display, and that copy costs frames. A MUX switch lets the discrete GPU drive the display directly. Advanced Optimus is a MUX that changes mode without a reboot and keeps G-Sync working.

Do all gaming laptops have a MUX switch?

No. Of the 33 gaming laptops and mobile workstations we list that have a discrete GPU and state a mode, 8 are plain Optimus. Three of those are 2025 models, including the Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 with an RTX 5060 and the Acer Nitro V 15 with an RTX 5050.

Which laptop brands include a MUX switch most often?

Among the gaming and workstation laptops we list that state a mode, ASUS has five MUX implementations across ROG and TUF, and Lenovo has five Advanced Optimus implementations, all Legion. HP's three sit in ZBook and Omen rather than Victus. The budget sub-brand is usually where it gets cut.

Is Advanced Optimus better than a MUX switch?

For most people yes, because it switches without a reboot and keeps variable refresh working. A plain MUX gives the same display routing but needs a restart to change mode, so in practice people pick one mode and stay in it.

Does a MUX switch hurt battery life?

In discrete mode yes, because the discrete GPU stays awake to drive the panel rather than idling. That is the tradeoff a plain MUX forces you to choose up front. Advanced Optimus avoids it by moving between modes as needed.
