Facepunch publishes two specs for Rust. The minimum asks for a Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600, 12GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060, RX 470 or Arc A580, with the note that an SSD is "highly recommended or expect longer than average load times". The recommended spec asks for a Ryzen 7 3700X or Core i7-6700K, 16GB of RAM, and an RTX 3060, RX 6600 XT or Arc B580, and the note changes to a flat "SSD Required". Both ask for 45GB of space.
Here is what that means across the 180 laptops we track.
110 of them have integrated graphics. 54 have a discrete GPU. The other 16 do not publish a GPU figure at all. So before any discussion of settings or frame rates, the majority of laptops on the market are not Rust machines, and no amount of turning things down changes that.
The rest of this guide tiers the 54 that are, cheapest first, with a resolution and frame rate target for each.
The RAM Requirement Is a Non-Event, and That Is Worth Knowing
Rust's 12GB minimum looks awkward on paper because almost nothing ships with 12GB. In practice it disappears: laptops jump straight from 8GB to 16GB, so the same 117 of our 172 machines with a published RAM figure satisfy both the 12GB minimum and the 16GB recommendation. There is no middle tier to worry about.
What that really means is that RAM is not where you should be making your decision on a Rust laptop. If a machine has 16GB it has cleared Facepunch's bar, and the GPU is the whole question. The counts above are why: a 16GB laptop with integrated graphics meets the memory spec and still cannot run the game.
The exception is if you are buying 8GB. 50 of our 180 laptops ship with 8GB, and that is below the published minimum. If the memory is socketed you can fix it for very little; see laptops with upgradeable RAM first, because 106 of 180 have it soldered.
Storage Is the Quiet Problem
Rust wants 45GB, and Facepunch escalates the SSD note from "highly recommended" to "required" between the two tiers. The SSD part is fine: 140 of our 180 laptops ship an NVMe drive, and essentially nothing in the modern market ships a mechanical boot drive.
Capacity is the issue. 97 of the 162 laptops with a published storage figure ship 512GB or less. On a 512GB drive, after Windows, Rust's 45GB is a meaningful share of what is left, and Rust is not usually the only game someone installs. Every machine in Tier 2 and above below has a free NVMe slot, which is the cheap fix.
Tier 0: Integrated Graphics, Which Is Most Laptops
Verdict: do not buy this for Rust.
110 of 180 laptops in our catalogue are here. Integrated graphics on a current Intel or AMD mobile chip is well below a GTX 1060, and Rust at its lowest settings is still a large open world with a long draw distance. This is the tier where people buy a laptop, install the game, and conclude their machine is broken.
If you already own one, nothing in this guide helps. If you are buying, the cheapest discrete option below is the floor.
Tier 1: Minimum Spec, 1080p Low, Around 60fps
Target: GTX 1650, RTX 3050 or RTX 4050 class, 16GB, 1080p.
This tier meets or just clears Facepunch's minimum. Expect to play at low settings at 1080p with a reduced draw distance, which in Rust is the setting that costs the most and matters most.
| Machine | CPU | GPU | RAM | Display |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 (RTX 4050) | Core i5-13420H, 8 cores | RTX 4050, 6GB | 8GB, socketed | 15.6in 1080p 144Hz |
| Acer Nitro 5 AN515-57 | Core i5-11400H, 6 cores | RTX 3050 Ti, 4GB | 16GB, socketed | 15.6in 1080p 144Hz |
| HP Victus 15-fa | Core i5-13420H, 8 cores | RTX 3050, 6GB | 8GB, socketed | 15.6in 1080p 144Hz |
| Dell G15 5510 | Core i5-10200H, 4 cores | GTX 1650, 4GB | 8GB, socketed | 15.6in 1080p 120Hz |
The catch: three of these four ship 8GB, which is below the published minimum, and the Dell's GTX 1650 is below the minimum GPU. Treat the 8GB models as 16GB machines you have to finish yourself.
The pick: the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-57, on the strength of being the only one here that already has 16GB. The 4GB RTX 3050 Ti is the weakest GPU of the group on paper and the machine is still the least work.
Tier 2: Recommended Spec, 1080p High, 100fps and Up
Target: RTX 3060, RTX 4060 or RTX 5050 class, 16GB, a 144Hz or faster 1080p panel.
This is where Rust becomes a good experience rather than a tolerated one, and it is the tier most people should buy. Facepunch's recommended GPU is the RTX 3060, and everything here is at or above it.

| ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA506 | Ryzen 7 5800H, 8 cores | RTX 3060, 6GB | 16GB socketed | 15.6in 1080p 240Hz | 512GB |
| Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6H | Ryzen 7 5800H, 8 cores | RTX 3060, 6GB | 16GB socketed | 15.6in 1080p 165Hz | 512GB |
| Acer Nitro V 15 ANV15-52 | Core i5-13420H, 8 cores | RTX 5050, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 15.6in 1080p 165Hz | 1TB |
| ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA507 | Ryzen 7 7735HS, 8 cores | RTX 4060, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 15.6in 1080p 144Hz | 512GB |
| Dell G15 5530 | Core i7-13650HX, 14 cores | RTX 4060, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 15.6in 1080p 165Hz | 512GB |
| Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 (RTX 4060) | Core i7-13700H, 14 cores | RTX 4060, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 15.6in 1080p 144Hz | 512GB |
| Acer Nitro 16 AN16-41 | Ryzen 7 7735HS, 8 cores | RTX 4060, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 16in 1440p 165Hz | 1TB |
The pick: the Acer Nitro V 15 ANV15-52. An 8GB RTX 5050 with 16GB of socketed memory, a 1TB drive and a 165Hz panel covers every one of Facepunch's requirements without a follow-up purchase, and the 1TB is the part the cheaper machines here make you buy separately.
If you want the highest frame rate for the money, the TUF A15 FA506 has a 240Hz 1080p panel, which is the fastest display in this tier by a wide margin. It is a 2021 machine with a 6GB RTX 3060, so you are trading GPU generation for refresh rate.
On the Acer Nitro 16: it is the only machine in this tier with a 1440p panel, and an RTX 4060 at 1440p in Rust means running at a lower internal resolution or accepting a lower frame rate. A 1080p panel is the better match for this GPU class.
Tier 3: 1440p High, or 1080p Competitive at 165Hz to 240Hz
Target: RTX 4070, RTX 5060 or RTX 5070 class, 32GB, 1440p 165Hz or faster.
The jump here buys two different things depending on how you play. On a 1440p panel it buys the resolution. On a fast 1080p panel it buys the frame rate stability that matters in a firefight.

| ASUS ROG Strix G16 2025 | Core i9-14900HX, 24 cores | RTX 4070, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 16in 1440p 240Hz | 32GB |
| Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 | Core i9-14900HX, 24 cores | RTX 4070, 8GB | 32GB socketed | 16in 1440p 240Hz | 64GB |
| Gigabyte AORUS 16X | Core i9-14900HX, 24 cores | RTX 4070, 8GB | 32GB socketed | 16in 1440p 165Hz | 64GB |
| HP Omen 16 2025 | Ryzen 9 8945HX, 16 cores | RTX 4070, 8GB | 32GB socketed | 16.1in 1440p 240Hz | 64GB |
| Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 15AHP10 | Ryzen 7 260, 8 cores | RTX 5060, 8GB | 32GB socketed | 15.1in 1440p 165Hz | 64GB |
| MSI Katana 15 HX B14WGK | Core i9-14900HX | RTX 5070, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 15.6in 1080p 144Hz | 96GB |
| Lenovo Legion 5i Pro 16IRX9 | Core i7-14700HX, 20 cores | RTX 4060, 8GB | 16GB socketed | 16in 1440p 165Hz | 32GB |
The pick: the Legion Pro 5 16IRX9. A 1440p 240Hz panel, 32GB socketed with a 64GB ceiling, 24 cores and a free NVMe slot is the most complete configuration at this tier.
The value pick: the ROG Strix G16 2025, which is the same GPU and the same 240Hz 1440p panel in a 16GB configuration, so you pay less and fit the second stick yourself. It caps at 32GB, which for Rust is not a real limitation.
Odd one out: the MSI Katana pairs an RTX 5070 with a 1080p 144Hz panel. That is a GPU running ahead of its display, which for Rust is not the worst problem to have, since the headroom goes into stable frame times instead of resolution.
Tier 4: 1440p Maximum Settings, 165Hz and Above
Target: RTX 4080 class and up, 32GB or 64GB, 1440p at 165Hz to 240Hz.
Rust is not a game that rewards this tier the way a single-player showcase does, but if you are playing it for hours a day on a populated server this is where frame times stop being something you notice.

| ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026) | Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, 24 cores | RTX 5090 | 24GB | 64GB socketed | 18in 4K 240Hz |
| MSI Titan 18 HX AI A2WX | Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, 24 cores | RTX 5090 | 24GB | 64GB socketed | 18in 4K 240Hz |
| Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 | Core Ultra 9 275HX, 24 cores | RTX 5080 | 16GB | 32GB socketed | 16in 1440p 240Hz |
| Acer Predator Helios 18 PH18-71 | Core i9-14900HX, 24 cores | RTX 4090 | 16GB | 32GB socketed | 18in 1440p 240Hz |
| Gigabyte AORUS 17X | Core i9-14900HX, 24 cores | RTX 4080 | 12GB | 32GB socketed | 17.3in 1440p 240Hz |
| ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 (2026) | Core Ultra 9 386H, 16 cores | RTX 5080 | 16GB | 64GB soldered | 16in 1440p 240Hz |
The pick: the Legion Pro 7i Gen 10. An RTX 5080 at 1440p 240Hz with socketed memory is the right shape for Rust specifically, and the 18-inch 4K machines above it are paying for a resolution this game does not need on a laptop panel.
Skip the 4K panels for Rust. The SCAR 18 and Titan 18 have 4K 240Hz displays, and running Rust at native 4K throws away frame rate for detail you will not read at the distances that decide fights. If you buy one of these, run the panel at 1440p.
What Actually Decides Your Rust Experience on a Laptop
Sustained performance, not peak. Rust sessions are long. A laptop that benchmarks well for ten minutes and then throttles is worse for this game than a slower machine that holds its clocks, and the thin 14-inch models are the usual offenders. Prefer a 16-inch or larger chassis if you are choosing between two similar specs.
Draw distance is the setting that costs the most. It is also the one that most affects whether you see someone before they see you. Budget your settings around keeping it up, rather than around shadows and water quality.
Refresh rate is worth more than resolution here. Only 40 of the 171 laptops we track with a published refresh figure run at 144Hz or faster. In a game decided by who reacts first, a 1080p 165Hz panel is a better buy than a 1440p 60Hz one, and the 60Hz machines in our catalogue are overwhelmingly the integrated-graphics models in Tier 0 anyway.
Check the panel before you believe the spec sheet. If the machine is second-hand or the listing is vague, the part number on the back of the screen is the real answer. Who makes laptop screens explains how to read it, and PWM flicker matters if you are going to be looking at it for six hours at a stretch.
